  • Walkthrough the incredible Roman ruins of Volubilis

Description

Controlled by the Romans, Volubilis has been identified as a world cultural site and earned worldwide recognition when Martin Scorsese made it a feature spot for his movie The Last Temptation of Christ.

Drive by the Saiss Plain to the archeological site of Volubilis. Start your visit by exploring the captivating ruins decorated with fine mosaics and colorful tilework representing Roman mythology. The visible remains are detected in various spots, on several parts, like the parts of the Corinthian columns, the capitol, the basilica, and a ceremonial arch giving you a vision of the Roman lifestyle.

The site contains the mosaic of the Labours of Hercules, the Baths of Gallienus, and Forum with their fragmentary mosaics and many others with an open-air hall of remains of altars, sculptural pieces, and multicolored mosaic collections. You will pass over a bridge to Fertessa rivulet and wander into an area mixed with residences and manufacturing places.

We drive alongside the peripheral hills of the Zerhoun and stop for a visit to the town of Moulay Idriss. Hundreds of Moroccans travel on pilgrimage to the holiest Islamic center. Then leave it to Meknes, one of the four famous Imperial Cities Of the Moroccan Kingdom recognized as a UNESCO Heritage Site.

There you will start your tour at Hri Souani, the most famously state-owned horse stables of Haras where the Arabo-Berber horses were raised and kept. It was built in the era of Moulay Ismail by his soldiers and located next to a pond which used for the underground channels that carried water from the Middle Atlas Mountains.

Then, you stop for a few minutes in front of the Royal Palace, where you can make some photoshoots of the Seven Bronze gates before getting through the alleys of the Mellah with its exceptional atmosphere and fine Mauro-Hispanic architecture. Your Meknes tour comes to an end when you drive to Borj Sud to take the panoramic view of the Medina.
